Notice of Intended Marriage To marry in Australia you will need to complete a “Notice of Intended Marriage” at least one month and one day prior to the intended wedding and no more than 18 months in advance.
Note: To shorten this time special approval must be obtained from the Registrar of 'Birth Deaths and Marriages' - or Local Court. Australian Couples - the Notice of Intended Marriage is be signed in front of either · An authorised Celebrant · A Justice of the Peace (JP) · A Barrister or Solicitor · An Australian Consular Officer · A legally qualified Medical Practitioner · An Australian Diplomatic Officer International Couples - the Notice of Intended Marriage is be signed in front of either: · An Australian Consular Officer · An Australian Diplomatic Officer · Also the list of authorised people in the Australian Couples section. Note: Only Australian citizens with these qualifications are accepted. Birth Certificates If you were born in Australia you will need to have your birth certificate. If you were born elsewhere you can use your Passport, if you do not have a birth certificate or passport then a statutory declaration will be sufficient.
Note : This is not the case if you are Australian born - you will need to obtain a birth certificate.
Age Restrictions You must be 18 years of age or over to be married in Australia, except where you have express permission of a Judge.
Divorced or Widowed If either party has been divorced then a Decree Absolute (Divorce papers) are required. If either party is widowed then Death Certificate is required.
